In order to analyze the variability of phytoplankton blooms, a thirteen-year chlorophyll-a time series (1998-2010) was done from GlobColour weekly (8-days) product data set. The maximum chlorophylla and the increasing biomass beginning year days were computed from the original data and from the original data adjusted with a Gaussian curve model. The time series showed a clear seasonal pattern with increasing amplitude of chlorophyll-a value, and a positive trend toward the maximum values were found. The maximum chlorophyll-a year day was predominant in July (southern winter), and phytoplankton blooms were found to begin in April/May (southern fall) corroborating studies in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. The modeled ones showed the same patterns, indicating a good agreement with the original data set, except the magnitude of the values which were not exactly reproduced by the model, which smoothed the data.
